Before the World Gets Loud
Murphy reporting for morning headquarters duty.
There is a very specific kind of morning that happens before the world gets loud.
But first, there is the part nobody sees.
Wake up.
Take my medicine.
Wash my face.
Do the skincare.
Put on the comfy clothes that still make me feel like a person.
And then the shoes.
The shoes matter.
I do not know why this is true, but it is. Shoes make me feel like I have joined society, even if society is only my living room.
Barefoot Julie is one decision away from crawling back under a blanket.
Shoes Julie might go to the gym early.
Shoes Julie might make a list.
Shoes Julie might even believe she has a plan.
Maybe.
Then I make my way to my morning headquarters.
The lamp is on.
Jack Johnson Radio is playing quietly in the background.
The dogs have taken their positions.
My laptop is open like I’m about to do something terribly important.
And then Murphy appears.
Not beside me.
Not near me.
Peeking over the top of my laptop.
One paw here.
One giant golden head there.
A full body lean that says, “I support your dreams, but also please stop typing.”
This is my morning headquarters.
There is usually my Infuse water somewhere nearby disguised as grape drink. A gauze blanket I did not technically need but absolutely required. Music soft enough to keep the morning gentle. A dog watching the front door like unpaid security. Another dog pretending not to care from across the room. And Murphy, reporting for duty with the emotional intensity of a middle manager who has concerns.
Some people have a clean desk routine.
I have a golden retriever pressing his whole personality into my lap while I try to remember what I was doing.
And honestly?
It works.
Because this little corner is where I start putting the day together. Not perfectly. Not quietly. Not without fur.
But with a warm lamp, a soft blanket, a few open notes, a good morning playlist, and the steady reminder that I do not have to rush straight into being useful.
Some mornings are not about getting ahead.
Some mornings are just about settling in.
And if an 85-pound dog decides your personal space is now a group project, maybe that counts as part of the routine.
Morning headquarters: one laptop, one blanket, quiet music, and absolutely no personal space.
Tiny Truth:
Some mornings do not need a fresh start. They need soft music, good skin, real shoes, and a dog with boundary issues.
